Woodland Dark

Step into Woodland Dark—a richly layered quadriptych that invites us to slow down and truly see. I painted this series of four intimately scaled panels to weave a mysterious, dreamlike tableau of nature’s hidden sanctuaries.

If you watch the timelapse video of my process with this one, you'll see that I was playing with a technique new to me, where each additional layer of paint reveals or obscures different details, creating depth through its harmonious interplay of deep forest tones, botanical silhouettes, and flashes of iridescence and gold leaf. I hope that the result is one both of stillness and depth—a moment where the forest breathes and secrets stir.

The effect, I hope, is that Woodland Dark becomes a meditative experience—a layered, unfolding narrative. At first glance, a tangle of foliage and birds; look closer and shimmering elements emerge, revealing unexpected details and a quiet luminosity that shifts with the light. Did you spot the hummingbird? And the butterflies?

Although each panel works separately, it's when they are placed together that the works form a symphonic whole and "make sense."
